In one week, Elon Musk previewed robotaxis, showed off robots that can dance, and successfully caught a 250-ton rocket out of the air with a pair of metal chopsticks. It’s weeks like this that make you realize we’re living in the future. So let’s break it all down.

On October 13th, 2024, Elon Musk pulled off one of the most remarkable feats of technology I’ve ever witnessed—SpaceX managed to catch a 250-ton rocket using giant robotic arms they’ve nicknamed ‘chopsticks.’ Think about that for a second. This rocket was falling out of the sky at five times the speed of sound, over 3,800 miles per hour, and they they caught it like grabbing a falling brick with chopsticks. This isn’t just a crazy stunt; it’s a huge step toward making space travel a commodity. SpaceX and Elon’s ultimate vision is make the human species multi-planetary, beginning with the colonization of Mars. But in today’s world, Elon estimates it’d take 1000 trillion dollars to build a city on Mars. His goal is to reduce the overall cost with a 1000x improvement in rocket tech, bringing the price to $1T. Over 40 years and $25B investment per year, that’s pretty doable if you consider the US GDP is $29T.

So in short, the ability to reuse rocket boosters by grabbing them like rice with chopsticks is a major step to getting that 1000X improvement. I’m hopeful travel to Mars will be a reality in my lifetime.

But that was just the end of Musk’s week. Just three days earlier, on October 10th, Tesla unveiled its long-anticipated robotaxi at the ‘We, Robot’ event held at Warner Bros. Studios. Introducing the Cybercab—a fully autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals. Musk is claiming that these robotaxis are transitioning from supervised Full Self-Driving to unsupervised Full Self-Driving. What does that mean for us? Essentially, you could hop into a Cybercab, set your destination, and relax while the car navigates through city streets, dodges pedestrians, and even anticipates traffic changes—all without any human intervention.

But Musk didn’t stop there. At the same event, he introduced Tesla’s latest innovation in robotics— Optimus. These aren’t your average factory robots; Optimus can dance, perform intricate movements, and handle tasks that require both strength and dexterity. These humanoid robots are designed to take over repetitive and physically demanding jobs, freeing up humans to focus on more creative and strategic roles. Optimus is equipped with sensors and AI that allow it to navigate complex environments, making it suitable for tasks ranging from assembling products in factories to assisting in home environments by fetching groceries or performing household chores.

Musk estimates that these robots will be priced between $20,000 and $30,000 each, making them accessible for both industrial and personal use.

So, what does all of this mean for us? Let’s start with the robotaxi revolution. If Tesla’s Cybercabs become widely available sometime 2026, as Musk predicts, we could see a dramatic shift in how we navigate our cities. No longer would personal car ownership be a necessity for many. Instead, you could summon a Cybercab on-demand, reducing the number of vehicles on the road, lowering emissions, and alleviating traffic congestion. This model not only promotes sustainability but also offers unprecedented convenience and efficiency in urban transportation.

Turning to the robots, the potential impact is equally transformative. Optimus and its successors could revolutionize industries by taking over tasks that are dangerous, repetitive, or require significant physical effort. This integration of humanoid robots into the workforce could lead to unprecedented productivity gains and the creation of new industries we haven’t even imagined yet. Moreover, in home settings, these robots could enhance our daily lives by handling routine chores, giving us more time to focus on what truly matters.

Elon Musk has always been a visionary, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
